Book Review Time!

Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1)Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really appreciate that Laini Taylor writes teenagers with strength, confidence, and free spirit. It is hard for anyone to lead a double life, much less a 17 year old art student in Prague with a family that would surely raise eyebrows. Karou answers truthfully when asked about family or other aspects of her life, but in such a way that would leave the inquirer never really sure whether she means what she says. When you have chimaera for a family, it’s best to be mysterious. However, her closest friend is beginning to question the “errands” she keeps having to run (collecting imperative supplies from various, shady hunter and merchant types around the globe), and that balance is becoming much trickier to hold. When Brimstone, a monster that is the closest thing she has to a father, asks her to go out for the zillionth time on an errand, she runs into a bit of a problem. Namely, Akiva, a soldier seraph whose purpose is to rid the world of these monsters so that the realm of angels may return to greatness. When Akiva sets eyes on Karou his first instinct is: devil. Enemy. Kill. But something stops him. She escapes with her life hanging in the balance, and the events that follow will change the course of her existence; present, past, and future. This isn’t your little sister’s romantic fantasy. Welcome to a world in which the beauty of human daily life, art, and architecture are a brilliant mask for a brutal war between angels and devils, and how love got caught in the middle. I’m looking forward to Laini’s continuation of the story, Days of Blood and Starlight… and when the movie comes out, I'll definitely be there!
